A Flower?

I am stiff and sore today, but very proud of the beginning of my front lawn and garden makeover. The idea is to eventually have a lawn-free rock garden of sorts, and I started by removing the four small boxwood shrubs from the very rear of the flower bed, where they completely disappear from view once the asters and coneflowers start to grow. Since I don't cut the flower stems until spring, it means the shrubs don't provide any visual interest for most of the year. I decided to move three along the curve of the stone steps, and the last one in between my Japanese maple and another wider shrub. The digging was a lot of work, and my tight muscles can attest to that this morning, but I think the re-arranging looks so much better. I also added a lavender phlox, a red asiatic lily, and some violet garden sage to the front garden, and put a three coloured flower whose name escapes me to the little side one near the clematis and silver mound. The last thing I did was choose three tall grasses to replace the shrubs: two are the kinds that turns pale yellow and feathery throughout the winter, while the last is called a porcupine grass and has beautiful yellow and green stripes. They will look stunning against the stone veranda wall, and provide a great contrast in every season without the flowers obstructing them.

The colourful photo was taken last summer, when the flowers were in full bloom. as you can see, they completely overwhelmed and hid the shrubs.

Those flowers look beautiful indeed!

Living in a flat, I don't have a garden, but I can imagine gardening being tough work but also extremely rewarding: you really feel you are getting something done and see the result of your work there and then - also there's the limitless freedom of choice in how you want your garden to look like, what flowers and plants to choose etc.

Oh, nice! I was digging as well, in clay...yikes! Your yard will look lovely when it is done, we have some great grasses here and flowers as well!

Aha, I was also digging and gardening today. My results are on my graafjansdijk blog, but I have to confess, the sheep provided rather a distraction.

Anyhow, your work looks great, and even though the flowers were beautiful last year, I can imagine you don't want to hide all your shrubs. I'm sure it's going to look fabulous when it's finished. I'm glad mine's a bit smaller than yours though ;-P

Beautiful Anne Marie. I have to admit not a fan of gardening, but looking at your results, well worth the time. Looks good.

I too have sore muscles as I planted all the stuff that I bought on Friday. I also have the rock garden arranged for future planting of alpine plants and a trench beside the driveway for stone tiles. That was all yesterday. Today I seeded the lawn as I only have dirt there, along with the new plants. I really should get back to my blog (bad me) and post some pictures of it all. (my front yard is "browner" than your back yard).

I love your daisies! One of my favourite flowers!
Here, I am still waiting for the grass to green and the leaves to bud.
You will have to post pics of the finished product later in the season.

xx

okay okay
It sounds like everyone has been digging...
In my own defense, I'm still digging snow and splitting firewood.
So there. ;)

Snow? That was so 3 months ago, unless you live in Calgary, in which case it was so 3 hours ago.

I live only 3 hours from Calgary and have felt the ravages of the storm.
Snow only on the peaks, though.
