It Gets Better Project

I found this on an agent blog that I read yesterday and wanted to share it. I think it speaks to President Obama's leadership that he has added himself to the It Gets Better Project, which is trying to deal with the results of homophobia in American society, although I would quickly add that the US is not the only so-called civilised place on Earth where bigotry of this kind is still allowed to persist, unchallenged in places such as schools and work. I love this clip because he is fundamentally right: gay-bashing is un-American, if one agrees that America stands for freedom and individuality. If you love that about the US, and hold that truth dear, than it's time to accept everyone for who they are and let them pursue their liberty and dreams without fear and hatred.

It gets better, young people, so hang in there.

Well, since he is the President of the US and speaking to Americans, I agree with him. But, I feel this is happening and happens all over the world. Not just with someone who is gay, but with just someone who doesn't "fit in" to whoever "they" deem so. I was bullied in High School, by this one boy who didn't like me for whatever reason. I saw him many years later and he said to me"you don't remember me!", and coldly said, "oh yes I do". He turned and walked away.

anyway, great clip, have an awesome weekend Anne Marie.

He is so right! But I also agree with Grace. Homophobia is just one of the many differences among people; differences of race, culture and religion also meet with bullying, as do even socila differences. I was bullied at school because I didn't speak with the local west country accent!! In essence, just for being different! Still, if Obama is giving his support to one of the most targeted differences, and one which has been with us since the dawn of humanity, (so isn't it about time everyone got used to it?? ), then I say fantastic! I hope things really will get better for the younger and next generation.

I agree 150% with this. Kind of timely in Finland as well: there was a discussion program on telly the other week about Christianity and homosexuality, and the extremely bigoted views of the leader of the christian democratic party led to c. 20 000 people renouncing their membership of the Evangelic-Lutheran state church.

I am opposed to prejudice and persecution on any grounds, and since the president of the United States is without a doubt the most powerful person in the world I'm so happy to see him take a stand on this issue so openly.

Neither homophobia or bigotry have a nationality, unless there is a country called Ignorance.
I too was bullied in school & suffered the callous comments of two teachers. All because of a physical abnormality - thus making school life barely tolerable.
Today, I feel sorrrow for them coupled with a strange sort of gratitude. Because of what they did I was enabled to face the world.
Please be aware that this was my (soul) experience & that others may have become seriously inhibited.
The world needs leaders like Mr President
to show others the way.
